Do you have any idea about a comic strip character named McGurk or McGirk? This was someone who didn't quite "get it". Everyone often refers to the
personality today as a "space cadet". Please help!
Nothing comes to mind. There's "Geech" (1982-present) by Jerry Bittle about a smalltown garage mechanic who's not all there... "Boob McNutt" (1915-1934)
by Rube Goldberg, featuring a redheaded and somewhat dimwitted adventurer... and "Toonerville Folks" (1915-1955) by Fontaine Fox, the cast of which included
a school bully named Mickey McGuire. The only McGurk I recall, though, was an animated statue in a 1944 "Superman" comic book. Can you give me any more
clues? For instance, what year was this comic strip from? Was McGurk the main character, or a supporting character? What did he look like? What was his
occupation? Do you remember anything about any of the rest of the cast? Sorry I couldn't be much help. Please write back if you can recall any other information.
I have found out more information! The comic strip Tin Can Alley I was told has character McGirk. Please try this route. Thanks so much, I await your findings.
"Tin Can Alley" doesn't raise any flags, either. I'm going to ask a few friends of mine, to see if they've ever heard of it. I suspect that either it was a regional
comic strip that was never circulated nationally, or else it wasn't distributed in the United States. Would you know what year (or decade) it's from, or what
newspaper it appeared in?
First of all Bob, It could be "Tin Pan Alley ". Check both names. I know that it was roughly in the East coast papers week days. A Black and White Comic Strip.
If it helps, the local paper at that time was either the Newark Star Ledger or the Newark News. (which is no longer around) . These are New Jersey papers.
Haven't found anything out about either "Tin Can Alley" or "Tin Pan Alley" yet. At http://hometown.aol.com/comicsproj/creditsLP.html I found a mention
of a strip called "McGurk's Mob," which ran from 1965-1968, written by Bud Wexler and drawn by Marvin Stein. Could this be it? I haven't seen any samples
of the strip, but I'll look for some.
This may be it. Thanks for looking for the strips. I will look a little harder myself. Look to hear from you.
